Samuel Married Anniss Lovin Guess in 1855 in Attala County, Mississippi. They had three children: Martin, James Wiley and Samuel L. Brister, Jr.
He enlisted on April 29, 1862 at Rocky Point, Attala County, Mississippi for "three years or the war". He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863 and later exchanged. Listed as absent sick in Atlanta Hospital on August 19, 1863, returned to his unit later in the month. He served with his brothers Sgt. Edmond C. Brister (1838-1912) who was wounded and captured on July 20, 1864 at Atlanta, Georgia, Pvt. William Brister who died a Prisoner of War in Alton, Illinois on November 13, 1863. Other brothers, Pvt. Hockaday Brister, Co. I. 13th Mississippi who was killed at Gettysburg in July, 1863. His remains were re interred in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia after the war, One of the 2,935 Confederate Dead returned from that battle in 1871. Isaiah Brister, Zachariah R. Brister, James W. Brister all survived the war.
