Not sure where Bartlett was born. Descendants back 30 and 40 years ago were saying he was born in Henrico County. On the 1784 and 1785 Census taken of names of head of households in the counties of Virginia, there is a John Baugh, Sr. and Jr. living in Chesterfield County, but no John Baugh in Prince Edward County. Think the Sr. and Jr. were Bartlett's grandfather and father. But where were his parents living ten years prior ?

According to descendants, his first name was Charles, but he never seemed to use that name. There were at least two grandsons named Charles. Bartlett was the son of John Baugh, Jr. of Chesterfield County, who settled in Prince Edward County, Virginia and his mother may have been Phoebe Edwards who was born in Chesterfield county. Her brother-in-law, Thomas Trent of Buckingham County, become guardian of Bartlett's underage siblings when his parents died together in an accident in Prince Edward County.

Bartlett married first wife, Nancy Wooldridge on January 2, 1801 at Prince Edward County, Virginia. Nancy's father was Capt. Simon Wooldridge whose Estate Settlement in 1831 at Prince Edward County, VA, stated, "Bartlett Baugh, now of Tennessee". It is not known when or where Nancy Wooldridge died, but was probably between 1809-1814 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Bartlett married to 2nd wife, Nancy Crews/Cruse, but that marriage has not been found. The oldest child from that marriage was James who was born Feb. 1817 in Hawkins County, TN according to his obituary. Bartlett got a Tennessee Land Grant of 100 acres in 1827 in Jackson County and was living there on the 1830 Census. James' obituary says they moved to Williamson County, TN in 1836. According to my family, second son, Wyatt Woodruff was born in Maury County, TN, so they may have moved there before moving to Jackson County. Bartlett must have married Nancy Crews/Cruse 1814-1816. Nancy is on the 1850 census in Williamson County, TN, mistakenly listed as 32 yrs. old, when she would have been 52-62 yrs. old. The youngest of her children are living with her. According to family, she moved with son, William Monroe Baugh after the 1850 census to Henry County, TN. She must have died there since she is not on the census with them in 1860. According to the Neely Family book titled: "My People" by Annilu Bearden Odil, Nancy died in Paris, Henry County, Tennessee, no date given.

Note 1 : There is a marriage for a Barty Baugh to Nancy Kearny at Davidson County, TN. The license was issued on Dec. 20, 1808. Not sure this is the same Bartlett Baugh. His 2nd set of children were born beginning in 1817. There were several men in Virginia named Bartlett Baugh at the same time period.

Note 2: The Martin-Critz Cemetery in Burwood was previously known as the Drake-Neely Cemetery in Thompson Station. Before that, it was the farm of John Neely, from Virginia, father of Charles Lynch Neely who was the father of the three Neely sisters who were married to three of Bartlett Baugh's sons. The cemetery is now on private property just a few feet from someone's house. A driveway is between the house and the cemetery.

Note 3: Tennessee Archives: Bartlett Baugh purchased a cow for $7.00 in Jackson County on January 11, 1833.
