Phoebe was the daughter of Thomas Edwards of Dale Parish in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Her mother is unknown. Some descendants are saying she was Elizabeth Fauntleroy, but she may have been the wife of another man named Thomas Edwards who died in Surry County, VA. Many descendants think that Phoebe was married to John Baugh, Jr., although a marriage hasn't been found. The Chesterfield Courthouse burned and now the marriages start at 1771. It is believed that Phoebe and John died together in some sort of accident in 1794 since the probate on their property in Prince Edward County starts on Nov. 24, 1794. They left 10 children and two properties, one, a tobacco plantation with 4 slaves (two mothers and with a child each) that John was to inherit at his mother's death in Chesterfield County and the one they lived on in Prince Edward County. The court in Prince Edward County appointed Thomas Trent(her brother-in-law) of Buckingham County as the guardian of the children. It is usually a relative who comes forward to take responsibility of someone's children when they die. The court records never give the names of the parents of the orphaned Baugh children.

Note: 4 Indirect Proofs of Phoebe Edwards as Mother of Children

1. Brother-in-law, Thomas Trent, appointed by court as guardian of children.
2. Thomas Edwards calls his daughter, Phebe Baugh in his Will.
3. Thomas Edwards leaves his daughter, Phebe Baugh a slave named Agge. In the Inventory of the Chesterfield tobacco plantation, there is listed a slave named Magge and child. It is believed that Agge/Magge are one and the same.
4. A John Baugh, believed to be Phoebe's husband, signed the surety bond for the marriage of Phoebe's brother, William to Phoebe Coghill in 1785.
