Matilda Mae "Tillie" Gellenbeck VanMeter, 96, formerly of Lafayette, and had been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Ed (Patricia) Oswalt, Route 4, Attica, died at her residence on Tuesday, July 5, 1994, at noon. She was born in Finlayson, North Dakota, on December 8, 1897. She was the daughter of August and Anna (Dexter) Gellenbeck.
She moved to Lafayette as a teenager and lived there for many years. She married John William VanMeter on September 23, 1918, in Lafayette. She and her husband formerly owned a coffee shop in Lafayette. They had lived for several years in Tippecanoe, Fountain and Boone counties. After their retirement they had wintered for several years in Fort Myers, Florida, until health prevented them from traveling. Mr. VanMeter died on April 22, 1960. She had formerly attended the Thornton Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Patricia) Oswalt, Route 4, Attica; a son, Elmer "Red" VanMeter, Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Flack and a brother Hugh "Bud" Gellenbeck, both of Lafayette; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, a grandchild, four sisters, and four brothers.
Services will be held at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, Friday, July 8, at 11 am with Reverend Gene Polf officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Vale Cemetery, Lafayette. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 am until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice.
