Charles Edwin Howard died early Wednesday morning at his home in the south part of the city after a long illness. Mr. Howard had been a resident of this city for a number of years and had many friends who had hoped that his illness might yield to treatment and his life be saved, and that such was not to be is a matter of regret to all. He was a man who was highly esteemed by all who knew him and these friends extend their sympathy to members of his family.

The deceased was born in New York October 22, 1845 and had reached the age of 71 years, 9 months and 23 days. When a small boy, he moved with his parents to Indiana and was raised there. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the service of his country and remained with the army until he was honorably discharged. He was a man of fine patriotism, loyal to his country and his flag and done his full part when called upon to defend country and flag on the field of battle. Mr. Howard had been twice married. Hs first wife was Miss Elizabeth Crow and to them four children, three sons and one daughter were born. His first wife preceded him in death many years ago and he was married September 5, 1888 at Detroit, Mich, to Miss Ida Mary Presley who with their seven children survives him. These children are Melvin Howard, now a soldier in the United States army and stationed at Syracuse, NY; Richard Howard of Chicago, Mrs. (unreadable) Con of Hiawatha, Kans, Mrs. Beatrice Heiser of Omaha, and Minnie, Joseph and Emma who live at home.

The funeral was held at two o'clock yesterday at the home, the services being conducted by Rev A.B. Whitmer. Interment was in the Sheridan Cemetery.
