James D. Howard

The next year, his parents having moved to Indiana, he joined them there. From there he journeyed on to Illinois, where he remained till 1861, when he returned to Ind. to enlist in the army with a brother. He was assigned to Co. I 9th Indiana Volunteers Infantry. He was discharged the following year on account of disability brought on by severe illness. He returned to Illinois where he met and on October 1, 1863, was married to Miss Phoebe Ferris at Aurora. They settled in Henry county and there their five children were born. In the spring of 1884 the family came to South Dakota, were Mr. Howard took up land in Sully Co., which he successfully cultivated. He was very loth to leave the old homestead but two years ago his children having all married and left the farm he moved to Blunt to be near his sons. At the time of his death he was paying a visit to the farm which is occupied by his son-in-law, J. S. Walker, and family. Funeral services were held at the old home Friday P. M. and he was laid to rest in the Blunt cemetery. His wife and all his children survive him. The children are Mrs. J. S. Walker of Marston, Mrs. Bertha M. Howard of Onida, Leon D. and J. A. Howard, of Blunt, and Mrs. A. C. Boyles of Lead. The deceased was a man of strict integrity and many other sterling qualities and commanded the respect of all who knew him. The world loses a liberal minded patriotic and progressive citizen, and his family an affectionate husband and father.
