J.S. "Slim" Arnold , age 81 , of Church Hill went home to be with the Lord at his residence, Friday, July 16, 2010 after an extended illness.

He was born June 18, 1929 and was a life long resident of Hawkins County. He was a member of the McPheeters Bend Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a greeter and trustee for many years before his declining health. He retired from Slip-Not Belting Company in 1999 after 34 years of service. He was a honorary member of the McPheeters Bend Ruritan Club and a auxiliary member of the Goshen Valley Fire Department.

He loved the outdoors and always had a big garden until he was unable to work in it. He was a Vols "Big Orange" fan of both the men and women.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Arnold in July 5, 2007 and his son, Gerald Arnold in May 6, 2009. His parents, Carl and Hazel Collins Arnold, a brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Edna Arnold.

Survivors include a son, James Jimmy "Punkin" Arnold of the home, daughter Janet "Sissy" Derrick and husband F.D. Derrick of Rogersville, step-daughter, Linda Goad of Church Hill. Grandsons, Andy Derrick and fiancee Joann, Jason and Debra Derrick and Aaron Derrick, step-grandson, Brian Goad and step-great grandson, Travis Goad. Special brothers and sister-in-laws, Carl Jr. and Mary Arnold of Church Hill, Eddie and Debbie Arnold of Church Hill. Special niece Sondra Summey and special great nephew, Brody Summey.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 pm Sunday at the Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.

Funeral services will be conducted 7 pm Sunday at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Roberts and Rev. Ronnie Grimes officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 am Monday at the McPheeters Bend Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Andy Derrick, Jason Derrick, Aaron Derrick, Alvis Arnold, Jon Summey and Rick Arnold. Honorary pallbearers are Alex Arnold, Zachery Arnold, Brown Simpson, Raymond Christian, George Calhoun, Harold Patterson, Denver Head, mark Kincheloe and Micheal Gilbert.

The family would like to thank the Caris Healthcare nurses and Dr. Amy Lynn Crawford for the loving care and compassion they showed our dad during his illness. May God Bless you all.

A special thank you to all the family and friends who have called, visited and helped in anyway during dad's illness, we love and appreciate all of you, May God bless you all.
