OTTUMWAN CRUSHED UNDER CAR
An Ottumwan man was crushed sometime before 1:30 p.m. Sunday when the bumper jack that he was using on an old car slipped out of position according to the Wapello Co. Sheriff's Office.
Killed was Clifford Cain 41, of 1217 N. Wapello who died at arrival at the Ottumwa hospital.
Sheriff officials reported that Cain had arrived at the Joe Knapp residence one and one fourth miles east of Ottumwa to attain auto parts. He was told to search for them in one of several autos behind the home and to remove the parts he needed. When he didn't reappear; Knapp began to search for him. Just prior to 1:30 p.m. Knapp found Cain trapped under a car. He raised the jack which lifted the car from the front left bumper, and removed Cain.
Cain was born Aug. 23,1930 in Putman County, Missouri to George and Eva Mullinex Cain. He had lived in Ottumwa since 1962.
He was a member of the Missouri and Iowa National guard and was a member of the Rutledge
Full Gospel church.
He married Cathy Wulff July 1, 1968 in Missouri. She survives. Also surviving are his parents; two sons; Randy and Joseph both of Ottumwa; four daughters; Eva Marie,Linda Mae, and Tabitha Cain; all of Ottumwa, and Cheryl of Hedrick; one stepdaughter; Mary Kay Wulff of Ottumwa; two brothers; Cloyd and Ronald of Queen City,Missouri and two sisters;Louise Bergmeter of Putman Count, Missouri and Mrs. Lois Swann of Kirkville, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marie in 1967.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Jay Funeral home. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
