Ida Jane Collins was born 1895 in Vernon, Texas where her father, Uriah Collins, served as high school principal. The family moved to Fisher, Fisher County, Texas to the farm of her grandfather, Stillman Barber. In 1910 the family moved to Abilene to provide better education for the children. Ida Jane earned a B.A. degree from Simmons College in 1917. In 1922 she attended the University of California, Berkeley, and later did post-graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Colorado. In 1941 she received her M.A. degree from Hardin-Simmons University. She taught school in several Texas localities, but her longest commitment was in Wichita Falls, spanning more than 40 years. Subsequently she managed an apartment complex, then moved to Alvin to care for her older sister, Mary.

In spite of severe physical disabilities in her later years, she retained an alert mind. On her 100th birthday, celebrated in a Pasadena nursing home, she received tributes from a number of former students, several of whom she had inspired to go into the teaching profession. She always contributed very generously of her time and money to worthwile causes, such as in service to elderly members in her church in Wichita Falls and in organizing Sunday school classes. She kept a cheerful attitude, even in her trying later years, and was interested in keeping abreast of current events. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church, Wichita Falls, and South Park Baptist Church, Alvin, as long as she was able. She was a charter member of the Wichita Falls chapter of the American Association of University Women. She died at the age of 102 and 9 months
