Caroline Louise Reynolds, called Carrie Lou, was the first born daughter of Joseph Shewmake Reynolds (1869-1935), an attorney, and his wife Frances Pauline "Fannie" Hansberger 91866-1856), of Augusta, Georgia. The family moved to Atlanta in 1916. Carrie Lou's siblings were William Glascock Reynolds (1903-1967), a noted artist, and Mary Josephine Reynolds (1905-1987, Mrs. Henry Russell Powell).

On 3 May 1927, Carrie Lou Reynolds married Alexander Stephens Mitchell (1896-1983), called Stephens, a prominent Atlanta lawyer and historian. He was a son of Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) and his wife Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens (1872-1919) and brother of Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) who wrote "Gone with the Wind."

In the first year of her marriage, Carrie Lou suffered a miscarriage; but was able to have two sons later: Eugene Muse Mitchell (1931-2007) and Joseph Reynolds Mitchell.

Carrie Lou and her husband and sons were members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atlanta.
