Joseph Shewmake Reynolds was a son of John William Reynolds (1841-1913, son of James Madison Reynolds and his wife Mary Ann Jones) and his wife Mary Louise "Mamie" Shewmake (1845-1927, daughter of Judge Joseph Allen Shewmake and his wife Caroline E. L. Hankinson).
Joseph married Frances Pauline "Fannie" Hansberger (1869-1959) in Augusta, Geaorgia, on 23 July 1901, his 32nd birtday. She was a daughter of Jean Pierre Hansberger and his wife Francesca Pauline Mast, both French.
Joseph and Fannie had three children: Caroline Louise "Carrie Lou" Reynolds (1902-1950, Mrs. Stephens Mitchell), William Glascock Reynolds (1903-1967, m. Margueryte Scott, became a noted artist) and Mary Josephine Reynolds (1905-1987, m. Heny Russell Powell).
Joseph was an attorney. The family moved from Augusta to Atlanta around 1916, and he died there on Christmas Day, 1935.
