Longtime resident and avid gardener Leora "Lee" M. Allen dies at 85
Leora (Lee) M. Allen, a longtime resident of Palo Alto and Stanford, died Nov. 1 in Los Altos following a long illness. She was 85.
Born Feb. 9, 1915, in Los Angeles, the former Leora Luce grew up in Southern California and graduated from Pasadena City College in 1935. Her family moved to the San Joaquin Valley in the 1930s, where her father became a well-known sheep and cattle rancher.
An accomplished athlete, she met her future husband, journalist Peter C. Allen, on a tennis court when both were teenagers. He joined the Stanford staff in 1942 and is now University Editor Emeritus.
The couple lived in Barron Park and Palo Alto, then moved to campus in 1964. Early on, Lee Allen worked at the Stanford Men's Rest Home, a private convalescent facility operated in a large house on Alvarado Row. Later she worked for many years at The Richardson's, a former apparel store in Town and Country Village.
An avid gardener and outsdoorswoman, she also was a member of the Stanford Faculty Women's Club and the Stanford Historical Society. She shared with her husband a keen interest in Stanford athletics.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by daughters Tina Allen of Mountain View and Lyn Carr of Stanford, and granddaughters Carolyn Weatherbie of Everett, Wash., and Sarah Bellandi of San Diego.
Private services were held Nov. 10. Arrangements are under way to plant a tree on campus in honor of Peter and Leora Allen.
