Peter C. Allen, a Stanford University history expert, died Jan. 11 of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 86.

During his 30-plus-year career at Stanford, Mr. Allen wrote books on the university's history, including "Stanford: From the Foothills to the Bay." He also edited the "Stanford Alumni Review."

A 1936 Stanford economics graduate, Mr. Allen played on the Stanford basketball team that included Hank Luisetti, who introduced the one-handed jump shot in the mid-1930s.

Mr. Allen worked for the Santa Paula Chronicle and the Pacific Coast Edition of the Wall Street Journal. He later became a reporter for the San Mateo Times in 1940.

During his six years as editor of Stanford's "Alumni," the magazine won 15 major awards.

He was a founding member of the Stanford Historical Society in 1975 and founding editor of its journal.

Mr. Allen was the widower of Leora Allen. He is survived by his two daughters, Tina Allen of Mountain View and Lyn Carr, and two grandchildren, Sarah Bellandi and Carrie Weatherbie.
