"MRS. JOS. P. HOGAN DIED THIS MORNING"

"Mrs. J. P. Hogan of New Orleans, nee Miss Bernice Smyly of Biloxi, died in the former city this morning at the Hotel Dieu at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Hogan was 38 years old and leaves besides her husband six children to mourn her loss. For a number of years Mr. Hogan was engaged in business in this city, being in the furniture business and later keeping a grovery at the corner of Howard avenue and Main street. Mr. Hogan and family left Biloxi several years ago and have been in New Orleans ever since. Mrs. Hogan was the daughter of Mrs. J. S. Smyly and the sister of Misses Laura and Jessie Smyly of this city. The body will be shipped to Biloxi this evening and will be interred in the cemetery tomorrow."

"The funeral of the late Mrs. J. P. Hogan will take place this evening at 3 o'clock from the residence of her mother, Mrs. J. S. Smily, on East Howard avenue. Mrs. Hogan died in New Orleans yesterday at the Hotel Dieu and her body was forwarded to Biloxi last evening."

Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Records, Book 3, page 85: Bernice was the wife of Joseph Hogan; she was a native of Al; she died from "uremic convulsions from pregnancy". The family lived in New Orleans.
