In 1872, at the age of sixteen he came with his parents, early pioneers, to Smith County, Kansas. In 1908 he moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska, where he resided until the time of his death. He was married to Mary E. Woodward, February 24, 1878, who has been his loving companion for over fifty-nine years. To this union were born five children.
Two daughters preceded him in death. Florence Benjamin May 15, 1934, and Vivian Klaus December 29, 1913. His father and mother, two sisters and one brother also preceded him.
Although in failing health for several years, he was always cheerful and stood his suffering with great patience. While not active in church work he gave evidence of his belief in God and prayer and often expressed a desire to go.
He leaves to mourn his departure his devoted companion and the following children: Fred and Vern of Guide Rock and Walter of the home, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two sisters, Katie Lockwood and Ellen Payton of Lebanon, Kansas. A grandchildren, Pansy Miller, a daughter of Vivian Klaus, deceased, made her home with them from infancy until the time of her marriage.
Funeral services were held at the United Brethren church at Maple Grove, Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Irvin Dunbar, a friend and neighbor of the family. Music was furnished by a mixed quarter who sang, "Going Down The Valley," "Whispering Hope," "Saved, Saved The Night."
