1st Regiment, Texas Cavalry (McCulloch's) (1st Mounted Riflemen)
Joined Company B/Private in Colonel Henry McCulloch's 1st TX Mounted Rifles, in 1861. The Unit was organized with about 1,000 men in May, 1861, and served in the Department of Texas on the frontier. In April, 1862, the unit was reduced to five companies and redesigned the 8th Texas Cavalry Battalion.
Mustered into Company G at Middle TN (probably) on May 9, 1862.**(Note:CSA/CW Records on Film Number M227 roll 23, indicate Samuel Maverick mustered out as a Private.) Family history indicated the information below:
"Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February 1863, after he swam into the Cumberland River to ignite an enemy gunboat"

Surrendered with Company G under Joseph E. Johnston at Goldsboro, NC on April 7, 1865.
After the war, Maverick returned to San Antonio, where he farmed on the land that now makes up Brackenridge Park, north of downtown.
Passed the Texas bar exam in 1867.
Ran a lumberyard and general store in 1879.
Built the Maverick Bank in 1884, but it failed by about 1892.
Married Sallie Frost on May 14, 1871,and they had six(6) children.
He was long involved in preservation efforts at the Alamo, and in 1888, he contributed $10,000 toward the construction of the Alamo Monument. In 1889, he escorted the Belknap Rifles, a local volunteer military company, to New York to participate in the centennial of the founding of Manhattan. He also donated land to the city which was named Maverick Park in his honor.
