"Montpelier", Anderson County, SC

The original home was built circa 1800 by Samuel Maverick, Jr. and wife, Sarah Elizabeth (Anderson) Maverick (grandparents of Samuel Augustus Maverick, II) to be their summer home.

Samuel Maverick, Jr. named Montpelier after his paternal grandmother, Catherine (Coyer) Maverick's hometown in France.

In 1810, Samuel Maverick, Jr. and wife, Sarah Elizabeth (Anderson) Maverick, moved their family from Pendleton, South Carolina and made Montpelier their permanent residence.

Samuel and Elizabeth had five children, including Samuel Augustus Maverick, Sr.

Samuel Augustus Maverick, II was born in the original house on 14 May 1837.

Sarah Elizabeth (Anderson) Maverick died 27 Sep 1818. She was the youngest daughter of Gen. Robert Anderson, Sr. and Ann (Thompson) Anderson.

In 1850, the house burned. Samuel Maverick, Jr., along with his daughter Elizabeth and her husband William Van Wyck, rebuilt the house (pictured above) that is still standing on a knoll near the original homesite. Soon after rebuilding the house, Samuel Maverick, Jr. died 30 Apr 1852.
