Martha Rooks was born April 1, 1884 on Spring Creek near Denby in Shannon County. She was a daughter of Joseph Oliver and Kate Robinson Rooks.

At the time she met Joseph (Ed) Livermont, she was working at the Cody Bank. They were married in 1904 and over the years had eleven children.

In 1907, they moved to the Joseph Rooks place south of Vetal. In 1913, they built a new home on their ranch. Her husband Ed died in 1946. In 1949 Martha sold the house to Dr. Sebring and it was moved to Martin. The house was remodeled by the Sebring family and still stands in the town of Martin.

She and her youngest son John, moved to Wanblee, where most of her sons and their families were living.

She loved to play the piano and encouraged John to accompany her on the violin. When they moved to Wanblee, she no longer had room for her big piano, so she gave it to her eldest son Joe. He eventually gave it to his daughter Joan Greenough and she later passed it to her daughter Denise Pauly. Both of Denise's daughters, Rachel and Rebecca Pauly, learned to play it.

Martha died from a stroke on January 23, 1956 at the hospital in Martin, SD
