Charles Rooks was born on August 10, 1876, at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. He was the eldest son of Joseph Rooks and Kate (Robinson) Rooks. Charles' father, Joseph Rooks, served as a trusted translator (iyeska) for the Oglala Lakota at the signing of the 1868 Ft. Laramie Treaty. Charles and his brothers helped their father on the vast Joseph Rooks Ranch in the Red Stone Basin area south of Kadoka. Charles married Ann LaPointe, the daughter of Jacque LaPointe and Jennie Drips, in 1897. To their union were born, Charles Jr., in 1898; Jacob, in 1900; Stanley, unknown; Leah, in 1902; Zona, in 1906; Frank, in 1908; Evelyn, in 1911; Emaline, in 1915; William, in 1916; Andrea, in 1920; and Eugene, in 1922. The children went to school in Rapid City, St. Francis, Pine Ridge and the Holy Rosary Mission.
After his beloved Anne LaPointe Rooks died in 1932, Charles later married his second wife, Nellie Standing Bear; they then resided on a ranch near Wanblee, SD. In 1949 Charles went to Phoenix, AZ to visit his children Emaline, William, and Eugene. Shortly there after he contracted pneumonia and unexpectedly passed away on October 16, 1949 in Phoenix where he was buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. Charles' sole survivor is his youngest son Eugene Rooks, 89, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and so forth. True to His heavenly Fathers command He was fruitful, and multiplied.
Charles' reinterment placed him beside his first wife, Anne, in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery; St. Francis, SD. Arrangements were placed in the care of his grandson Charles Rooks with Rooks Funeral Chapel, Mission SD.
