PASADENA, CALIFORNIA, FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1901--- After a lingering illness of several months, Mr. James S. Tileston of 164 South Los Robles Avenue, fell peacefully asleep on the evening of Monday, May 27th. The loving regret with which his name is mentioned today throughout Pasadena is evidence of the wide-spread influence of his gentle, unostentatious life. Although for some years retired from the activities of business and public service, Mr. Tileston retained to a remarkable degree his keen interest in all the affairs of life and has been well characterized as being eighty-three years young. Wit, sympathy, love of nature, deep spirituality, and a touch of the old school of courtliness, made his personality one not to be forgotten. At the services held at his home on Wednesday afternoon, where he lay surrounded by the fragrant flowers which his own hands had tended, Mr. Tileston's warm and intimate friend, the Rev. A. Moss Mirwin, spoke feelingly of the many beautiful traits of his character and of the wide and varied experiences of his long life. Even to those who knew him but slightly, he was always the genial, kindly gentleman whose fine manner revealed the fine manhood within. Those who had business dealings with him knew of the unswerving integrity and of the temperament which bore success or loss with serene calm. Nearer friends knew the keenness of his intellect, the charm of his conversation, the value of his friendship; and they knew, too, that he drew the strength of his daily life from divine fellowship. Mrs. Elizabeth Jones sang the hymns "Sun of My Soul" and "Abide With Me", which had been sung also at the funeral of Mrs. Tileston.

Mr. Tileston visited in St. Cloud a number of times, and the friends he made there will regret to hear of his death. He went to California from Hingham, Mass., where he was a cashier in a bank for forty years.
