Verta Ree Ayers, 86, a retired school cafeteria worker, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at a local care center.
Funeral: 1:30 Friday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.
Called Bertie by family and friends, she was born May 10, 1921, in Parnell to Addie and Tom Nivens. She married R.E. Ayers on July 26, 1945, and together they had four children. They lived in River Oaks since 1950, attending Trinity Baptist Church. Bertie loved to bake and give the food to friends and neighbors, and to write letters and cards. She lived at Fireside Lodge the last 2 1/2 years.
Bertie was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Lana Dwinell; both parents; and all six brothers and sisters.
Survivors: Children, Larry Ayers and wife, Sandy, of Walnut Springs and Lawanda Smith and husband, Jim, and Doris Garrett and husband, David, all of River Oaks; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
