Edward Barnwell Smith was known as Barney. He was born in Washington, DC at 310 3rd Street, N. W. (the Leta Apartments). During this childhood he had many pets - dogs named Campa and Rex and a pony named Bessie. He was a paper boy for the Evening Star and earned $6.00 a month. Barney once wrote "When my father died in 1914 my mother took my brother, John, and me to live with my grandfather and grandmother Robinson over my grandfather's veterinary hospital where I lived until I was drafted into the Army - April 11, 1942. The hospital was located at 222 C Street N.W." As a child Barney attended Chester A. Arthur Elementary School and then McKinley Technical High School where he played basketball. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in June, 1931 and was a practicing veterinarian in Washington, DC for many years. Barney and Helen were married 23 June 1942 in St. Patrick's Rectory at 10th and G Streets, N.W., Washington, DC. Barney's brother John was the best man and Helen's cousin, Helen Jean London, was the maid of honor. Barney and Helen traveled to Fredericksburg, Richmond and Norfolk, VA on their honeymoon. During his career as a veterinarian he served, at different times, as President, Secretary and Treasurer of the D. C. Veterinary Medical Association. He served in the Army during World War II as an officer in the Veterinary Corps. His entire Army career was spent in the States. He left the Army 6 March 1946 as a Major in the Army Veterinary Corps.
