"Mann Page Smith, D.V.S., was born on December 11, 1884, at Fayetteville, North Carolina. His parents are William E. Smith, a railroad contractor and builder, and Charlotte Nelson Page, of Powhatan, VA. He is a grandson of Mann Page, of Albemarle County, VA.
Dr. Smith in his early days attended the public schools of his native city, and later studied in private institutions in Athens, Ga., Newport News, VA., and Richmond, VA, where he spent the greater part of his life.
In the fall of 1903, Dr. Smith matriculated at the United States College of Veterinary Surgeons. He graduated in the spring of 1906, making the Highest general average ever attained by a student of this institution.
After being graduated Dr. Smith engaged in the practice of his profession in Salisbury, NC until the spring of 1907, when he accepted the position of Secretary of the United States College of Veterinary Surgeons; President of the Veterinary Association of the District of Columbia; Secretary of the Board of Examiners of the District of Columbia; a member of the Washington Veterinary Medical Association and of the Veterinary Associations of North Carolina and Virginia.
Ever since his connection with the college, Dr. Smith has been indefatigable in his endeavor to build up and improve the institution in every way, and through his efforts, coupled with those of the trustees and faculty, the most marked progress has been made in the past few years along all lines. It may be said that Dr. Smith is one of the most popular professors on the staff, for the reason that he makes the interest of every serious student his own.
On November 18, 1907, Dr. Smith married Carrie Barnwell Robinson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. Barnwell Robinson, and they have two sons, Edward B. and John P.
In the summer of 1913 Dr. Smith was elected to the position of Dean of the Faculty, made vacant by the resignation of Dr. Benjamin T. Woodward.
In January, 1914, Dr. Smith severed his connection with the college in order to devote all of his time to private practice, being succeeded as Dean by Dr. Hulbert Young."
