Services for Mrs. Annie Beers Lays Gresham Pioneer to Rest
One of Gresham real pioneers was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon when funeral services were held for Mrs. Annie Laura "Aunt Annie" Beers, 78, who died at her home here Sunday morning. Final rites were held in the chapel of the Jacobson Funeral home here. The services were conducted by Rev. John L. Magoon, pastor of the Bethel Baptist church of which Mrs. Beers was a member. Interment was in the Gresham cemetery. Music for the services was furnished by C. E. Rusher, Mrs. Leslie Walrad, all of whom sang fitting vocal selections. They were accompanied by Mrs. Leslie Walrad. Pallbearers were all nephews of Mrs. Beers. They were A. W. Metzger and William Metzger, both of Gresham; Kenneth Proctor of Oregon City; Walker Proctor of Sandy; Walter Weatherly and Herbert Weatherly, both of Newberg. Miss Annie Laura Summerfelt was born at Valley Falls, Kan., January 30, 1861. On July 2, 1880, she was married to William C. Beers in Valley Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Beers came to Oregon in 1883 and lived near Gresham all of the time since their arrival in this state. Mr. Beers passes away at their farm home south of Gresham on July 2, 1926 and Mrs. Beers lived in Gresham in the years following the death of her husband. Mrs. Beers was a member of Bethel Baptist church and of Gresham Rebekah lodge No. 61. She was a mother of ten children, six of whom survive. they are Mrs. A. F. Hoover, Mrs. Gus Donley and William Beers, all of Gresham; Mrs. Art Dixon of Wemme; Earnest Beers of Willamina, and Henry Beers of Eagle Creek. Other survivors also include nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many other relatives. A fitting tribute to the memory of the deceased was penned by Rev. John L. Magoon, her pastor, who writes as follows: Friendliness, cheerfulness, and love characterized the life of Mrs. Beers and because of these winsome virtues she surrounded herself with a host of friends, many of whom always spoke of her lovingly as "Aunt Annie". Criticism of the faults of others was entirely foreign to her nature. She saw good in all loved all. "As the years began to take their toll and feebleness of body and paisied hands tormented her, she plodded uncomplainingly on, using such strength as she had, in the performance of helping little tasks around the home, always thinking, not of herself, but of others. "So this precious life drew to a close, battling bravely and stubbornly against weakness of body, determined to go on, rising from her bed only to find herself to weak to stand and receiving many a hard fall, only to try again and again until at last her valiant, noble spirit yielded and with a sigh she lay down and slept. At peace with God and men, no one could doubt it. Those last days of peaceful sleep, free from pain, free from care--a last living testimony to the world of the in-dwelling presence of Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour."
