James was one of eight children born to William S. W. Key and Cynthia Aseneth Abbott. James and Mary Key Kilgore were married September 18, 1856 in Jasper, AL. James enlisted for 3 years in the CSA Army, Muster Roll, Company C, 13th Battalion, Alabama Partisan Rangers (Cavalry). James owned a lumber business and operated a saw mill in Alabama. The family moved to the Bullard area in 1893. James was a member of A&FM Lodge 785, Bullard TX. He was one of the organizers of the Lodge at Bullard, serving in all positions of office including Worshipful Master. Ten children were born to James and Mary Key. They were John Martin, Aseneth, Manerva, Washie, Nancy, Armstrong, Mary Jane, Celia, James T, and Julia.
