Hiel was the son of James William and Mary Key. He was one of ten children. Siblings were John Martin, Aseneth, Manerva, William Washington, Nancy, Mary Jane, Celia, James Thomas, and Julia. He married Nora Emmaline Sides of Bullard and they had nine children: James Wesley, Lillie, Brack L, William Claude, Jesse Armstrong, Mary Leora, Arlie Hunter, Eugene Roy, and Hiel Vernon Key. The family moved to Childress County in 1916 from Bullard, Texas.
