Joseph Lawshe Cloninger was born April 14, 1949 in Oakland Yalabusha County Mississippi according to his death certificate and census records of Yalabusha Co. Joe and his brother Pinkney were civil war vet's. Joe enlisted at Coffeeville Ms. 1864. He appears on a prisoner of war list surrendering at Citronelle,Alabama . Lt. General H. Taylor C.S.A. surrendering to Major E.R.S. Canby U.S.A. May ,9 1865. Joseph was in The 8Th MS. Calvary Co. C Confederate States Army. Joe Married Laura Agnes Booker or Brooks probably in Calhoun Co. Ms. around 1875. The Calhoun Co. Court house burned in the early 1900's. I have no record of their marriage except a land deed on November 13,1875 stating they were married and from Calhoun Co. Joe and Agnes were selling some land Joe had inhierited from the estate of his father Henry Cloninger. Joe sold his share to Robert Morehead for $20. Joe and Agnes had the following Children; Josephine, Charles Rufas,Joseph Lawshe Jr.,James Monroe,John Thomas and Dave M. I have good records on all these children except Josephine and Dave. I have been told they died young. I have been told that Agnes died when Joe Jr was young. Probably after 1892 when her last son Dave was born. Joe married two more times. On the census of 1900 Tallahatchie Co MS Joe is married to Ellen. Family story is, this is Ellen Jane Dunn Shannon. On the census living with the family is Etta Shannon. This is the daughter of Ellen Dunn Shannon. My grandfather married Etta Shannon 6 months after the census was taken. This would mean they were step brother and sister. I have been told Ellen Dunn died in 1904. In the census of 1920 Calhoun Co MS Joe is married to Mary. From what I can gather this is Mary Maza Potts Resonover. Mary had a daughter from another marriage named Pearl according to her grandson Charlie Potts from Water Valley MS. I visited with Charlie in 1982. He said Joe kept bee hives and whittled a lot. Charlie said Joe whittled wooden puzzels in the shape of a ball for his grandkids. I have one of these wooden puzzles today that was made for my father Doy Sr. in 1930. My dad said his grandpa came from MS to Texas in 1930 for a visit. He watched his grandpa Joe whittle the puzzle from an apple crate. It took about 2 hours to form the 6 pieces to make up the puzzle. My father Doy Sr.gave to me the puzzle in 1998 and is very special to me. I am amazed and thankful my dad was able to keep the puzzle all these years along with plenty of old photos and keep sakes that have kept me interested in doing family history. After Joe's visit to Texas in 1930 Joe returned to Mississippi. Mary died around 1931and Joe lived with his great nice Josephine Milam. Miss Josie was married to Jimmy Milam. I visited with her in 1982 she lived at Banner MS. I think she died in 1996. Miss Josie said uncle Joe was a tall man with a mustache. He also was a hard worker and always did more than his share of the chores. Later Joe became ill and would have to stop half way up the hill and rest ater fetching water from the well according to Josie. Joe was in his 80's at this time. Miss Josie said uncle Joe loved to fish. He would set at the creek bank and cuss the fish for hours. Joe recieved a military pention according to Josie. I checked pention records and found where Joe had applied in 1931. He recieved one dollar a day for his millitary service in the civil war. Miss Josie said Joe was finaly so sick he was bed ridden. Josie took care of him until he died. She said she could not remember when except Jan. 9th in the early 30's. She was pretty close. It was Feb. 8, 1933. I finaly found a death death certicicate in 1995. His name was listed as John Clolinger. I know this to be him because of the informant Jimmy Milam, Miss Josie's husband and the burial at Mt Liberty Cemetery. It was very cold the day Joe died according to Sadie Clolinger Dillard. She is the daughter of Joe Jr. I visied her also in 1982 and have kept in contact with her. I would like to thank her she has been a great help. We have written dozens of letters in this time from 1982 to 1998. Sadie said Joe's son Jim had ice cicles hanging from his face the day he came to tell his brother Lawshe of his father's death. Joseph Sr. has a civil war marker at Mt. Liberty Cemetery near Water Valley MS. I found this marker in 1982. I have three pictures of Joe Sr. One when he was about 30 and another when he was about 60 and the last in his 80's. Two of the pictuers were identified by my aunt Clara Cloninger. The young picture was on a tin type about 2 inces round and has been in my parents collection of old photos for years. on the back of the photo is written Frank's grand father. Frank was married to my aunt Clara. The photo of the older Joseph is on a 3x5 postcard type with no writting on back. This photo was discoverd in 1998 with several others by my cousin Jane Rutledge Fox. The photos were in a trunk thought to have been lost. The trunk belonged to my grandmother Ellen Shannon Cloninger. Aunt Clara says the picture of the old man is Joeseph Cloninger Sr. She was in her 20's when he came to visit in 1930 and she remembers him well. He stayed with my uncle Frank and aunt Clara for a few nights in Farmersville, Texas. Aunt Clara says that my grandmother Ellen Shannon Cloninger did not like Joeseph much.
