James Andrew Bridge
Age 86, passed away on Friday, June 6, at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Rolla, Missouri, on May 2, 1922, to Josiah and Lucy Atwater Bridge. Jim came to Los Alamos in 1943 after studying for three years at the University of Maryland. He met his future wife, Edulia Marie Bustos ("Eddie"), in Los Alamos in 1945. They were married Nov. 18, 1946. Jim was a PFC in the Special Engineer Detachment during the Manhattan Project. He worked with Perc King's group at Omega Site on the Water Boiler, the enriched reactor used for measurements of neutron cross sections. During the early 1950s Jim and his young family moved to Albuquerque while he finished his mechanical engineering degree at the University of New Mexico, where he graduated in the top 2 percent of his class. He worked briefly at Sandia National Laboratories before his wartime boss recruited him to return to Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He worked at Los Alamos until his retirement in 1986; many of those years were spent as a mechanical engineer at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). He continued to live in Los Alamos in the home he and Eddie built on Barranca Mesa, until shortly before his death. Jim was an Alfa Romeo enthusiast and an active member of the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club of New Mexico and the Sports Car Club del Valle Rio Grande. Besides his wife, Jim is survived by three sons: Arthur (daughter-in-law Meredith "Suki" Coonley and grandchildren Alexander and Anna Sofia Bridge) of White Rock, Richard Allan (daughter-in-law Sheri Brown) of Los Alamos, and Jo David (daughter-in-law Sarah Peterson) of Tijeras. His sons James Edward and John William, his parents, and his brothers Richard and Herbert preceded him in death. The family would like to thank the staff of Los Alamos Medical Center, Aspen Ridge Assisted Living, and Sombrillo for their care of Jim during his final months. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The National Parkinson Foundation. The family of James A. Bridge has entrusted their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.
