Arkansas Governor, U.S. Senator. During the War of 1812, he served in a company of U.S. Volunteers at Fort McHenry, Maryland. After the war, he graduated from Baltimore College in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1817 and commenced to practice law in Gallatin, Tennessee. He was military secretary to General Andrew Jackson in his Florida campaign of 1818, moved to Alabama, in 1820 and was judge of the Lauderdale County court in 1822. In 1829, he was appointed by President Andrew Jackson secretary of the Territory of Arkansas and appointed Governor of Arkansas, serving (1835-36). Upon the admission of Arkansas as a State in 1836, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 49.
