Menomonee Falls News March 23, 1923 " John(sic) Kissling, Sr. answers Final call. A Pioneer Citizen. Another pioneer and early settler of Wisconsin was called to his reward, when John Kissling, Sr., passed on at his home in the village Thursday, Mar ___at 930 P.M. aged 80 years ___month and fifteen days. Deceased had been very active in spite of his years until several weeks hence, when he suffered a broken thigh that incapacitated him and caused great suffering at times until the endless sleep brought relief. During his illness he was constantly cared for by his son John Jr., his wife being quite feeble.

Mr. Kissling was one of the early settlers in the town of Polk, Washington Co., where he came as a boy of 23 years and experienced all the hardships of the early settles. When a young man he followed railroading and was one of the group that was intimately acquainted with the Earlings of the Milwaukee Road when they were located in the town of Richfield.

He was married July 25, 1867 and commenced farming carrying on a successful career as a tiller of the soil, until retiring in 1913, when he and his worthy wife became residents of our village. He was a devoted member of the St. Paul's Evan. Church, and left a legacy of good will behind into which inheritance, his own posterity now enjoy.

Surviving him is his aged widow, two sons, John, Jr. of Menomonee, Jacob of Springfield, Ia. (should be Jacob of Springville, Iowa) and daughter, Mrs. J. E. Maloney of San Francisco, Cal. A stepson, Michael Bauer of Jackson, Wis. And a step-daughter Mrs. Frank Lux of Montecello, Iowa, also twenty-eight grandchildren. The funeral will be held from the residence to the St. Paul's Church. Rev. A. C. Ludwig officiating."
