Unidentified and undated Hartford, WI newspaper obituary: Mrs. Fred Fenske, nee Elizabeth Kissling, a former resident of these parts, passed away at her home at Tomah, Wis., Wednesday, November 2, death being due to heart failure. She had just attended a wedding ceremony and had returned home, when she suddenly fell over dead. Deceased was born in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, January 16, 1851, and had therefore attained the age of 68 years, 10 months and 3 days. When a little girl her mother died and she came to this country with her father settling at Ackerville. Here she remained until 1868, when she was united in marriage to Phillip Butterfuss. She then moved to Tomah, where she has made her home ever since. About the year 1885, her first husband died and several years later she married Fred Fenske. She was the mother of nine children, four from her first husband and five from her last husband. One child of the first marriage preceded her in death. Those surviving are: Anna ( Mrs. Smith), of Milwaukee; Rose (Mrs. Gesselson), of LaCrosse; Adolph, at home, Fred Fenske, Jr., of Tomah; Martha (Mrs. H. Drives), of Madison, and Otto, Herman and Alma (Mrs. August Westphal), all of Thoma. Besides these children she also leaves to mourn her untimely death two brothers and one sister. The brothers are: Jacob Kissling, Menomonee Falls, and Louis Kissling, and Mary (Mrs. Fred Eissner), both of this city. The funeral was held at the St. John's church at Tomah last Satuday. Interment being made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Mrs. Fenske's death came as a shock to her family. She was a dutiful mother, a helping friend to the needy, and a tireless woman to her husband. Although she is gone, her memory will linger in the hearts of those who loved her.
