Grandpa was in Walkers Division, Randall's Brigade, Robert's Regiment, Co. A 11th Texas Infantry in the War between the States. He enlisted 5 May 1861 in Melrose, Texas, Nacogdoches County at the age of 19. He lived in San Augustine County, Texas. Grandpa was discharged 4 March 1863 (17 days after his brother John died in winter camp) at Station Camp near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, due to Anasarca(dropsey). He was attacked with Rubella shortly after he entered the service and cough and diarrhea followed. Anasarca made it appearance two months before he was discharged. He never had constitution and strength sufficient for a soldier so they discharged him. According to Grandpa's Confederate Pension Application he states he was off for three months being disabled. He must have returned to his unit around June of 1863. There are no more muster rolls for him until April of 1865 which states that he was with leave 34 days since 15 April under Special Order No. 17 Dept. Hd Qts March 9/65. The next muster card states that he was admitted to the C. S. A. General Hospital, Shreveport, Louisiana on 30 January 1865 with Vul Incises (large cut). He returned to duty 3 February 1865. Grandpa states in his Pension Application that he served to the end of the war.
