Helen (Schlegel )Sholes, 93, last of the state's famous Schlegel triplets, died Saturday, May 3, 1969, at the Jackson Home, where she had lived for the last three years. Her sister Julia preceded her in death two months ago, and the other member of the trio, Mrs. George Sichler, of Alma Center, died at the age of 84.
The Schlegel triplets were the first born in Jackson County, and their birth was a sensation. People came from miles around to see them. They lived to become the oldest set of triplets in Wisconsin, and after the death of the Colghlin girls of Massachusetts in 1959, were the oldest set of triplets in the nation. The triplets were born in the township of Irving, and Helen lived in Jackson County all except four years of her life.
She and her husband, Arba Sholes, lived in North Dakota for a short time. The rest of their married life, the couple farmed in Melrose. After the death of her husband 25 years ago, Mrs. Sholes moved to Alma Center, where she lived with her sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Fred Haralson, Black River Falls, and Mrs. Carol Grubb, of River Falls, and a son, Martin of Milwaukee. Funeral services at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Langlois-Galston Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Koelemay officiating. Burial was at the Irving Cemetery.
