Another old timer has gone. In recording the principal events of the life of John Allen Beckett, who died at the home of his son, H.C. Beckett at Artesia last Thursday (April 30, 1925) afternoon at 3:30, it may be said that Mr. Beckett was one of the few pioneers remaining in the Valley, who was so closely identified with the early history of this section. Coming to the old town of Seven Rivers at an early date, Mr. Beckett played an important part in the rapid trend of developments, which has made Aretsia and the surrounding country what it is today. An interesting character that he was, he knew by heart practically all of the early happenings of this section that have now gone down in history to be studied by the coming generations.
John Allen Beckett was born in Fannin County, Texas, February 16th, 1845. It was here that he spent practically all of his boyhood days and obtained his early training and education, such as there was to offer at this time. At the age of 18 years he moved to Kinney County. Two years later he married Miss Melinda A. Blakeney and resided in this county for some time.
In 1884 he moved to New Mexico and located at Old Seven Rivers, then a frontier town, which will be long remembered by the early stockmen of this section. While here he engaged in the cattle business. Two years later he moved to Hope, where he has since resided, with the exception of sometime spent visiting among his children in later years.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Beckett, six of whom survive Mr. Beckett. They are: Geo. Beckett of California, Mrs. M.C. Stewart, of Carlsbad, MRS. J.T. FANNING of Hope, DAN BECKETT, of Artesia, Dave Beckett of Artesia, H.C. Beckett of Artesia.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Hope Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Rev. L.R. Simmons, pastor of the Artesia Baptist Church officiating. Mr. Beckett had only one lodge affiliation, the Masonic order, and it may be said that he probably enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest master Mason in this section, having received his master's degree in 1866.
The pall bearers were friends and acquaintances of Mr. Beckett at Hope and include D. Swift, J.H. Bridgeman, Bryant Williams, W.L. Whitaker, Noel L. Johnson and Virgil Craig.
