County Rancher to be Buried at Hope

Funeral services for J.A. "Dan" Beckett, 61 years old, who was killed in an automobile wreck west of Artesia Thursday, probably will be held in Hope Saturday afternoon, M.C. Stewart, brother-in-law of Beckett said today.

Burial will be at Hope where Beckett's parents and a child of Becketts are buried.

Death might have been caused by apoplexy, Stewart said he was told, although an Artesia physician who examined the body said he believed Beckett's neck was broken which would have caused instant death, it was said.

Found by Motorist

A passing motorist found Beckett's car upside down in the borrow pit at the side of the road. Beckett was dead inside the car.

Beckett was born at Fort Clark, Texas. He and his family came to Seven Rivers in 1884, settling there when Beckett was 11 years old. His father moved to Hope in 1887 and engaged in the sheep business.

For a number of years Beckett was associated with his father in the sheep business until the business was sold. Later he was foreman for a number of large cattle companies on ranches in that section.

Widow Survives

Beckett is survived by his widow; a son, John; two daughters, Mrs. Walter Pendleton, of near Jal, and Mrs. Eliza Swift of Artesia; three brothers, George and Cal Beckett, of Los Angeles, and Dave Beckett, of Vaughn; and two sisters, Mrs. M.C. Stewart of Carlsbad and Mrs. Mary Fanning of Tucson, Ariz.

One brother, Tom, and one sister, Mrs. John Runyan of Artesia, preceded him in death.

Beckett's father, J.A. Beckett, Sr. was one of the earliest settlers in the region. He was the first to take irrigation water from the creek running through Hope.
