Died...Miss Mary Long, born April 12, 1819 in West Virginia, near Charleston, and died June 12, 1908. She and Stephan Hand were married Sept. 30, 1838 near Canton, Illinois, where they resided until after seven sons and six daughters were born to them. Twelve reached maturity...Baptist...in the fall of 1865 they, with eleven children journeyed to Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas...July 10, 1884, they, with six of their children, headed west, hoping to improve the health of the husband, who had been an invalid for more than ten years. Their son John had preceeded them west by three months....arrived at her brother's, Ransom Long, October 20, 1884. The husband died in July, 1887. Two sons, Harvey and James died in Illinois, and two sons, Cyrus and Stephen, died in 1899, at the present home. Three sons, John, Michael, and Charles of Pataha Flat, six daughters, Mrs. Martha Hunt, and Mrs. Rebecca Long of Pomeroy, WA., Mrs. Jennie Dennison of Pataha, Mrs. Mary Potter of Oklahoma, Mrs. Elizabeth Milner, and Mrs. Nancy Spencer of Kansas. Sixtyone grandchildren, fiftythree great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.."
(Note: Nancy Belle (Hand) Spencer was born on September 20, 1858 and died on Aug. 1, 1937. Her husband, Dudley J Spencer, was born on July 31, 1854 and died on August 8, 1942. Their mortal remains were laid in the Littell Cemetery in Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas.)
On August 9, 1862, Harvey Hand volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in the Lancaster, Illinois/Timber-Hollis Township area of Peoria County by a well known business man and Lancaster area merchant, Allen L. Fahnestock.

When Fahnestock had about 100 volunteers he led his company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. Fahnestock was elected Captain of the men of the Timber Township company and on August 27, 1862, Fahnestock, and 96 of the other Timber Township volunteers, including now Private Harvey Hand, were mustered in as Company I of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
The men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out of the gates of Camp Lyon on September 7, 1862, with much fanfare, through the streets of Peoria down to the railroad depot, where they boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana, across the river from Louisville. Three weeks later the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Colonel Daniel McCook's Brigade chasing Confederate troops. On October 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those Confederate troops during the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the next few years.
After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate forces withdrew from Kentucky, while the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp. During the next three years, Private Harvey Hand would serve faithfully in Co. I as the men of McCook's Brigade served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Harvey was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, just to name a few. He also participated in General William Tecumseh Sherman's famous, or infamous, "March to the Sea".
After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Private Harvey Hand was mustered out of the service along with the rest of the surviving members of the 86th at Washington, D.C. Shortly after that, the surviving members of the 86th boarded trains bound for Chicago, Illinois, where they received their final pay and were discharged from the service. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois were back home with their families in Central Illinois.
Harvey Hand was married to Elizabeth Griggs on December 8, 1868 in Peoria County, Illinois. Elizabeth was born on March 13, 1849 in Peoria County, Illinois, the daughter of Franklin Griggs and Deborah (Largent) Griggs.

James worked, for a time, as a farm hand for his sister, Clara, in Montana. He eventually moved to Pomeroy, Washington, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a “gandy dancer”, ie. track examiner. He married his second cousin, Annie Laurie Davenport, Michael A. Hand’s granddaughter and Harvey’s niece, on September 9, 1918. The only child born to James F. and Annie L. Hand was;
A. Jack Duane Hand, born September 9, 1919.
James died in Pomeroy on March 21, 1943 and his mortal remains were laid in the Pomeroy City Cemetery in Pomeroy, Garfield County, Washington. Elizabeth Griggs Hand, his mother, lived with him in Pomeroy from ca. 1910 until her death.
5. Jesse Ellsworth Hand, born Feb. 17, 1881 in Iowa. Jesse married Iva B. Lewis at Canton, Illinois on October 16, 1904. They had one child;

Died...Miss Mary Long, born April 12, 1819 in West Virginia, near Charleston, and died June 12, 1908. She and Stephan Hand were married Sept. 30, 1838 near Canton, Illinois, where they resided until after seven sons and six daughters were born to them. Twelve reached maturity...Baptist...in the fall of 1865 they, with eleven children journeyed to Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas...July 10, 1884, they, with six of their children, headed west, hoping to improve the health of the husband, who had been an invalid for more than ten years. Their son John had preceeded them west by three months....arrived at her brother's, Ransom Long, October 20, 1884. The husband died in July, 1887. Two sons, Harvey and James died in Illinois, and two sons, Cyrus and Stephen, died in 1899, at the present home. Three sons, John, Michael, and Charles of Pataha Flat, six daughters, Mrs. Martha Hunt, and Mrs. Rebecca Long of Pomeroy, WA., Mrs. Jennie Dennison of Pataha, Mrs. Mary Potter of Oklahoma, Mrs. Elizabeth Milner, and Mrs. Nancy Spencer of Kansas. Sixtyone grandchildren, fiftythree great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.."

When Fahnestock had about 100 volunteers he led his company into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. Fahnestock was elected Captain of the men of the Timber Township company and on August 27, 1862, Fahnestock, and 96 of the other Timber Township volunteers, including now Private Harvey Hand, were mustered in as Company I of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
The men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out of the gates of Camp Lyon on September 7, 1862, with much fanfare, through the streets of Peoria down to the railroad depot, where they boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana, across the river from Louisville. Three weeks later the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Colonel Daniel McCook's Brigade chasing Confederate troops. On October 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those Confederate troops during the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the next few years.
After the Battle of Perryville, the Confederate forces withdrew from Kentucky, while the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp. During the next three years, Private Harvey Hand would serve faithfully in Co. I as the men of McCook's Brigade served in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Harvey was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia, Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, just to name a few. He also participated in General William Tecumseh Sherman's famous, or infamous, "March to the Sea".
After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Washington City (now D.C.) where they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue on the 2nd day of the Grand Review in May of 1865. On June 6, 1865, Private Harvey Hand was mustered out of the service along with the rest of the surviving members of the 86th at Washington, D.C. Shortly after that, the surviving members of the 86th boarded trains bound for Chicago, Illinois, where they received their final pay and were discharged from the service. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois were back home with their families in Central Illinois.
Harvey Hand was married to Elizabeth Griggs on December 8, 1868 in Peoria County, Illinois. Elizabeth was born on March 13, 1849 in Peoria County, Illinois, the daughter of Franklin Griggs and Deborah (Largent) Griggs.

He eventually moved to Pomeroy, Washington, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a “gandy dancer”, ie. track examiner. He married his second cousin, Annie Laurie Davenport, Michael A. Hand’s granddaughter and Harvey’s niece, on September 9, 1918. The only child born to James F. and Annie L. Hand was;

4. James Frederick "Fred" Hand, born December 5, 1878 in Orion Township, Fulton County, Illinois. James and Annie lived near Pomeroy, Washington. James worked, for a time, as a farm hand for his sister, Clara, in Montana. He eventually moved to Pomeroy, Washington, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a “gandy dancer”, ie. track examiner. He married his second cousin, Annie Laurie Davenport, Michael A. Hand’s granddaughter and Harvey’s niece, on September 9, 1918. The only child born to James F. and Annie L. Hand was;
A. Jack Duane Hand, born September 9, 1919.
James died in Pomeroy on March 21, 1943 and his mortal remains were laid in the Pomeroy City Cemetery in Pomeroy, Garfield County, Washington. Elizabeth Griggs Hand, his mother, lived with him in Pomeroy from ca. 1910 until her death.
5. Jesse Ellsworth Hand, born Feb. 17, 1881 in Iowa. Jesse married Iva B. Lewis at Canton, Illinois on October 16, 1904. They had one child;
