James Frederick "Fred" Hand, born December 5, 1878 in Orion Township, Fulton County, Illinois. James and Annie lived near Pomeroy, Washington. James worked, for a time, as a farm hand for his sister, Clara, in Montana. He eventually moved to Pomeroy, Washington, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a “gandy dancer”, ie. track examiner. He married his second cousin, Annie Laurie Davenport, Michael A. Hand’s granddaughter and Harvey’s niece, on September 9, 1918. The only child born to James F. and Annie L. Hand was;
A. Jack Duane Hand, born September 9, 1919.

James died in Pomeroy on March 21, 1943 and his mortal remains were laid in the Pomeroy City Cemetery in Pomeroy, Garfield County, Washington. Elizabeth Griggs Hand, his mother, lived with him in Pomeroy from ca. 1910 until her death.
