"You asked where I went to school? I went to nine: two in El Paso, one at Rankin, one at Carlsbad, one at Bardwell, one in Ennis, one at Abilene, one at Kemp and one at Pilltown. There were only eleven grades then and I graduated from grammar school at Kemp and then three years and three months of high school at Ennis. I moved to Rankin for the last six months of my senior year.
After Momma died on May 8, 1928, I had a birthday coming July 25th, and the uncles had decided to put Billie Jo and me in the Masonic Orphans Home in Fort Worth. They had to hurry to get us in before my fourteenth birthday. This was a terrible time for me because I had just lost Momma after losing Brother and Daddy and also being put in a strange place and not knowing anyone, I felt I had been forsaken and I hated the Home.
In the meantime, Curtis had married Gracie within a month after Momma died. I was so unhappy, I wrote Curtis and told him we were going to run away if he didn't come after us. He came, even though Gracie didn't want him to. The Home told him if they had known that we had a stepfather, they would not have admitted us in the first place. Gracie sure wasn't happy over that arrangement and told me that I couldn't stay there with them. That is how I wound up with Grandma Gorman (Catherine Hines Gorman) after finishing grammar school at Kemp, Texas.
I lived with Grandma for the next three years and three months. When she would get mad at me, she would call Curtis to come and get me. I'd go back until Gracie ran me off again. I don't remember how many times I was sent back and forth. In my senior year, Grandma had sent me to Curtis's. Gracie jumped on me (she was only three to five years older than me) and told me I couldn't stay. Uncle Jesse and Aunt Josie came over to Pilltown (close to Kaufman) and asked me if I'd like to live with them and finish school. It was like asking me to live in heaven. Of course, I was tickled to death. I had to change a few subjects ... especially Spanish as it was not taught at Rankin. Anyway, we (Wilmer, Falsom, two others and I) graduated from high school at Waxahachie in May, 1933. I really wanted to go to college, especially when Wilmer went to John Tarleton (in Stephenville, Texas) but couldn't see any chance of it. Then I decided to marry and get me a home of my own.
Billy Jo stayed with Curtis and Gracie until almost grown. After I married, she stayed with us some and wound up living with Grandma Gorman and Uncle Alfred until she married.
As for as my friends were concerned ... I moved around too much to have close friends. I was happy if I could get to Rankin. Lucille (Artie's daughter) was my closest one. I married Clyde Clay "Bud" Childress on October 13, 1933."
