Presidential Cabinet Member, Attorney General of Ohio. Born in New York City, he moved to Zanesville, Ohio in 1814 with his family when he was a child and graduated from Washington College in Pennsylvania in 1819. Stanbery studied law and was admitted to the bar when he came of age in 1824. He then moved to Lancaster, Ohio and entered into the law firm of Thomas Ewing as a partner and remained as such for over twenty years until 1846. A member of the Whig Party, he was elected as the Attorney General of Ohio, moved to Columbus, Ohio, and served from 1846 to 1851. He was also a delegate to the Ohio State Constitutional Convention in 1850. In 1853, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and resumed his law practice. In 1857, he moved across the river to Fort Thomas, Kentucky in Campbell County and continued his legal profession in Newport, Kentucky. Stanbery became a member of the Republican Party and was appointed by President Andrew Johnson as the United States Attorney General in July of 1866. He agreed with Johnson's conservative approach on Reconstruction and was brought into the controversy regarding how to deal it. When Johnson was impeached, Stanbery resigned on March 12, 1868 in order to serve as Chief Counsel for the President. Johnson was acquitted by the United States Senate and re-nominated Stanbery to his previous position as a member of the Presidential Cabinet, but the appointment was not approved by the Senate. Stanbery remained in Washington D.C. and resumed his legal career participating in several high profile cases. He returned to Cincinnati in 1870 and became president of the Cincinnati Bar Association. Deteriorating health conditions claimed his sight in 1880 and he died in New York City while waiting to undergo an operation to restore his sight.
