My paternal Grandmother, a lovely Irish lass.

Mary Francis Spalding, 50, died September 28, 1970 at Shawnee Mission Hospital in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

She was born December 24, 1919 to Jess L. and Hazel Violet May (Morris) Harding.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Kansas City, KS.

She had worked as a Pinkerton detective, at one time providing protection services for Arthur Godfrey.

My Grandma was admitted to the hospital for a gall bladder operation. Her surgical wound wouldn't heal, as she was a diabetic. She wanted to be released from the hospital so she could celebrate her wedding anniversary at home. The hospital released her (knowing of her condition) with a promise from her that she'd return the following day.

She fell down the front steps of her house, opening her wound. Gangrene set in and that was the beginning of the end for my beautiful grandmother.

She passed away two days before my maternal grandfather, Aubrey Sylvester Anglen.

Survivors include her husband, Charles A. Spalding Sr. of the home; a daughter, Mary Jean Brown, Kansas City, KS; three sons, Charles Spalding Jr., Robert E. Spalding Sr., and Gary Lee Spalding, all of Kansas City, KS., and 12 grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, two sons: Charles William and James Edward and one daughter: Patricia, who died in a house fire when she was very young.

Her baby sister, Hazel (Harding) Jones, passed away October 25, 2006.

Cause of death: Complications of diabetes (surgical incision burst, leading to gangrene).

My heartfelt gratitude for Ed Leffew's never-ending generosity & kindness in sponsoring my Grandmother's memorial. May God love & bless him and give him comfort in his own loss.
