My paternal Grandfather.

Charles A. Spalding Sr., 82, Kansas City in Clay County, died Aug. 17, 1993, in the Kendallwood Trails Nursing Center, Gladstone, Missouri.

Charles was born June 30, 1911 to Charles William and Harriet Prudence (Vieux) Spalding, the oldest of nine children. He was a lifelong area resident. He worked as a mechanic for the Santa Fe Railway for 13 years, retiring in 1973. After his retirement, he went to work for his brother-in-law at Jess Harding Heating & Air Conditioning in Merriam, KS.

He had two fingers severed while working for the railroad and had me convinced for years that I had pulled them off!

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation tribe.

Survivors include his second wife, Margaret Spalding of the home; a daughter, Mary Jean Foster, Wideman, Ark.; two sons, Charles Spalding Jr. and Robert E. Spalding Sr. of Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Josephine Yancey, Louisburg, Kan.; three brothers, Hubert Dillon Spalding and Eugene Spalding of Kansas City, Kan., and Leo Fredrick Spalding of Emporia, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Francis (Harding) Spalding, three sons: Charles William, James Edward and Gary Lee, and one daughter: Patricia.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Simmons Chapel; burial in St. Joseph's's Cemetery, Shawnee, Kansas. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the chapel, where the rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m.
