Merlin Briggs Harrison was the oldest son of Thomas Joseph Harrison and Laura Briggs. He was born Aug. 16, 1903 in Bountiful, Utah. Merlins mother was very religious and taught the gospel in her home and took her children to Primary, Sunday School and all their church meetings. He had good religious training. Merlins father played the violin and wrote music very well and he played for church programs and dances. He taught Merlin to play the violin and they would play together. Merlin also played the harmonica very well and was never without one . He played often for his family and friends. He was working at the Electric Railway in Salt Lake when he met Lola Leila Harrison. When they met it was Love at first sight! Lola was 15 and Merlin was 17. They soon started dating regularly. They were married on May 16, 1942 in East Los Angeles. On Jan. 22, 1925, Merlin bought a little home for his family at 4459 Tuttle St., in East L.A. , for $3,325. They both had to cash in their life insurance policies to make the down payment. In this home were born four children: Jack Perry, Ruth Evelyn, Bud Merlin and JoAnn Laura. Merlin worked for Continental Marble and Tile Co., and learned to set tile. He made beautiful rings out of pipe scraps. He made one for Lola and she never took it off and was wearing it when she died at 96 yrs. old. He would make lovely things and could fix anything and in time, he built on to their little house making it more comfortable for their growing family. Early in 1942, he became very sick with cirrhosis of the liver and in August 1942 he passed away, the night before his 39th birthday, leaving a brokenhearted wife and four children. He will be forever remembered for his good works and the love he had for his family.
A note about the picture. In 1954 the family gathered at the cemetery to clean up and place flowers on the graves. It was a time to greet friends and tell stories and share memories of those who had passed on. Afterwards, everyone would go to a nearby park and have a potluck lunch. We looked forward to it every Memorial Day. In the picture is Julie Ruth Harrison and her cousin, Wayne Wilson Harrison sitting near their grandfathers tombstone. Little Julie now lies to rest in Memorial #123440317 here in Rose Hills.
