Adelia Viola Clay was born November 22, 1869 to Levi and Mary Stillians Clay. When she was three years old, her father signed on to work for the section, and the family moved to Adair, Iowa. The Clays were the second family to settle in Adair; they also built the first home there. According to family lore, the Clays resided on the second floor of the Alonzo Inman farmhouse just outside Marble Rock. She and Loren Waiste Inman were placed together as infants in the same crib. On April 4, 1893, she married Loren Waiste Inman in Marble Rock, Iowa.
