Born on a farm just outside the town of Marble Rock, Gordon spent his early days there. He was the youngest child of Loren Waiste Inman and Adelia Viola Clay Inman. His father, a Baptist minister, preached at the Coldwater Baptist Church and later relocated to Charles City, IA. Gordon graduated from Charles City High School in 1926. He married Elva Gail Spence May 22, 1938 in Marion, Iowa. They had two children: Barbara Ann b. May 20,1943 and Beverly Jeanne b. June 17, 1944. Gordon worked for the Peterson Baking Company in Cedar Rapids for 25 years, and for Coe College until his retirement.
