Sarah Jane Orton was the second of eleven children born to Sarah Jane Orton & John Coulam, Jr. They had two children that died during their childhood. The first lost was Sarah Jane (1863-1866) and the second was Charles (1872-1877). Sarah was 3 years old and her dear mother's loved namesake.

The family were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and took heart in the belief that "Familes Are Forever" and that they would one day have their Sarah Jane back again.
