Mary Ann Coulam was the eldest of eleven children born to John Coulam, Jr. & Sarah Jane Orton. At eight years old, she was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a faithful member her entire life.

In 1890, Mary Ann's mother, Sarah Jane died. As the oldest daughter and unmarried as well, she took on the responsibilities of keeping the home and raising her siblings from that day forth. She was 29 years old.

Almost three years later, the fifth child in the family, John Cordon Coulam married Mary Ann Sarah Pitchers. Then just a few months later, her father passed away. The rest of her life was spent helping her siblings mature.

Five years after their father died the eighth child, Henry Rice Coulam left home and married Mary Ann 'May' Jackson. Two years on, the seventh child, Mary Ann's brother Joseph Coulam married Anna Marie Hansen. In 1903, three years on, the ninth child, her sister Fanny Coulam married Ernst Rollow Kimball.

Mary Ann continued to care for the youngest two children, Helen & Emily Coulam until her death in 1906; she was just 45 years old. Her loving care under difficult circumstances for wholly half of her siblings speaks volumes about the impressive woman she was and the Christlike life she lived.
