James D. "Jim" Anderson, age 83, resident of Shelby died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Crestwood Care Center following an extended illness.

Born May 31, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to James A. and Dorothy M. (Stueber) Anderson, he was a 1947 graduate of Shelby High School and played on the 1946 NOL Champion football team. In 1951 he received his Bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. In his younger years he was a lifeguard at Seltzer Pool, a caddy at Shelby Country Club, worked for veterinarian "Doc" Hensen and at the Shelby Pure Milk Company. Mr. Anderson retired from Shelby Mutual Insurance Co. as Vice President of Human Resources in 1989. Jim was instrumental in the development and construction of the building that is now known as the Kehoe Center.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, he took great pride in serving both the Shelby City and Pioneer Joint Vocational School Boards, as well as the Shelby Park Board.

Woodworking, gardening, mowing, golfing in the Retirees League, and breakfasts at McDonald's were the things Jim enjoyed. Family was most important to him and, being the fervent sports fan that he was, following and his children then grandchildren's sports, brought him particular joy. He coached his son's little league teams and enjoyed working at the Shelby Relays for years. His sense of humor was evident in his love of practical jokes and he was a friend to everyone. Jim never met a stranger.

He is survived by his children, James A. "Scoot" (Natalie) Anderson of Ashland, Mike (Cathy) Anderson of Shiloh, and Amy (Al) Bartosiak of Shelby; eight grandchildren, Joshua (fianc , Kristen Tafoya), Micah, Emily, Matt (Heidi), Michael (Tina) Anderson, Molly White, Aric (Kenda) Cornette and Abbey Bartosiak; seven great-grandchildren, Mylie, Jacob and Grant Anderson, Ella and Maisy White, Anderson "A.J." and Adelynn Cornette; two sisters, Jane Anderson of Shelby and Julie Beech of Cresco, PA and other relatives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Doris (Robb) Anderson on November 18, 2012 and one brother-in-law, Jack Robb.

Funeral services will be held 6:00 PM Wednesday, March 27, 2012 from the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend David Sipes will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Crestwood Care Center towards a memorial bench for Jim and Doris or the Shelby Athletics Boosters.
