RICHARD

Doris Helen Richard, 86, of Boone, died March 21, 2000, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. She was born Aug. 18, 1913, in rural Marion County, Iowa to Halleck Doras and Hazel Helen (White) Baker, the oldest of nine children.

Doris attended country school near Newbern through the eighth grade and graduated from Corydon High School in 1930, where she took normal training, doing her practice teaching in her senior year. Upon graduation, at the age of 16, Doris worked for the telephone company as an operator.

On April 21, 1935, Doris and Glenn Thomas Richard eloped to Unionville, Mo. Frosty and Ruth Richard served as their witnesses. During their 60 years of marriage, four children blessed their union, Michael Thomas, Deanne Carol, Kenneth Glenn and Susan Kathleen.

Following her marriage, Doris lived in Humeston, Denver, Colo., Ames and Perry, Iowa, finally settling in Jewell, Iowa, where she became a full-time wife and mother. During this time she was involved in family, school, community, church and civic activities.

Doris was a talented musician who began singing with her parents at the age of three. She was an accomplished pianist and played the violin in her high school orchestra. Her music was her solace in time of stress and she was often heard playing the piano into the night. She directed the youth choir and sang in the church choir and community vocal groups as well as around the piano during family get togethers.

Following Glenn's death in 1995, Doris moved to an apartment in Boone, where she lived until the time of her death.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Saramae Kathleen "Sally" Crim and husband Vince, and Ruth Geraldine Baker; brothers, Charles Marlin Baker, James Richard Baker and Halleck Dwight Baker; sister-in-law, Marianne Baker; brother-in-law, Keith Richard and wife, Marie; and brother-in-law, Don Bright.

She is survived by her children: son, Michael Thomas and wife, Kathy Richard of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter, Deanne Carol Jacobs of Boone, Iowa; son, Kenneth Glenn Richard of Riverside, Iowa; and daughter, Susan Kathleen and husband, Dale Lloyd of Charles City, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Doris is also survived by three brothers, Keith White Baker and wife Cathy of Kimberling City, Mo.; John Calvin Baker of Highland Park, Ill.; and Donald Francis Baker and wife Myke of Clear Lake, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Virginia Baker of Corydon and Dorothy Baker of Colorado. Also surviving are Glenn's brother, Forrest Richard and wife Ruth; his sister, Erma and husband Louis Niday and his sister, Mildred Bright, all of Corydon.

Her survivors also include numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many, many good friends she made over the years.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton with Pastor Joan White officiating. Burial was in the Humeston Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Danny Crim, Steve Bright, David Baker, Jason Crafton, Greg Rinehart and Curt Danielson.
