John Calvin Baker, age 94, of Chicago, Illinois and formerly of the Corydon and Chariton areas in Iowa, died peacefully on August 20, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois.

Following his wishes, he has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. at the Countryside Bible Chapel, southeast of Stratford. Burial of his cremains will be in the South Marion Cemetery southeast of Stratford. Friends may call at the Countryside Bible Chapel on Saturday, beginning at 4:00 p.m.

John Calvin Baker was born on July 29, 1923 in Newbern (Lucas County), Iowa, the son of Halleck and Hazel Helen (White) Baker. The family moved to Corydon, where he graduated from the Corydon High School. John joined the Merchant Marines and served during World War II. On July 14, 1955, John married Marianne Rigsbey in Chicago, Illinois. While living in Chicago, he was self- employed. He was an avid reader, especially of non-fiction, politics, and religion, and he enjoyed classical music, traveling, and was very devoted to and proud of his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his aunt and uncle, Grace and Guy Patterson and their daughter, Estalene Pierscbacher; his brothers and sisters, Doris, Richard, Charles, Dwight, Ruth, Keith, Donald, and Saramae "Sally" Crim. John is survived by a son David Baker of De Kalb, Illinois; a daughter, Jane Baker of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren, Kevin, Brandon, and Holly Baker, and Jialun Xu and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

In memory of John Calvin, memorials may be directed to the Chariton or Corydon Public Libraries, or a charity of your choice.
