Guitar legend Norm Barratt passed into Glory, 30 July, 2011, in England. He was 62.

Barratt was born on 5 February 1949 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England, and rose to popularity in Britain in the late 1960s fronting the progressive rock band Gravy Train. Many consider his incendiary guitar playing among the best that ever came forth from any British rock band and credit him with pushing British Prog Rock to the forefront of the genre.

Norm began his career in music while still in school. He would leave school to become an apprentice accountant while at the same time playing guitar in local bands at night including The Hunters and Newton's Theory. After his final exams, Norm moved to London with Newton's Theory.

Barratt formed Gravy Train in 1969 during the genesis of English progressive rock and immediately garnered attention. From 1970 to 1974, the band would release four albums and are still considered one of the top Prog Rock bands of the era.

During his time with Gravy Train, Barratt became a born-again Christian. When the band dissolved, he made a decision to use his talents for Jesus and began adding his gift to various Christian rock bands. He lent his searing guitar work to two albums by the Mighty Flyers and then joined up with the Alwyn Wall Band which would tour worldwide for several years.

After Wall retired the band to become a pastor, Barratt wrote songs and concentrated on working as a session player. He formed the Barratt Band, recording two albums and touring the world, while also recording with Wall and Larry Norman.

When the Barratt Band retired, Norm concentrated on support of other musicians, touring and recording with such notables as Steve Taylor, Cliff Richard, Barry McGuire, Jessy Dixon, Sheila Walsh, Phil Keaggy, Debbie Boone, Paul Young, Andy Pratt, and Steve Camp. He also became an album producer for other bands and artists.

With progressively failing eyesight, Barratt focused on production and recording while his live playing was confined mostly to his church's worship band.

Norm Barratt died as a result of extreme complications following surgery.
